My first job out of college in Nigeria over two decades ago was at a National Television Broadcasting Station.I started as Accountant II working primarily with manual records since the processes were completely manual.

Head Internal Audit at (NTA) Nigerian Televion Station. There is the General Ledger with Trial Balance on top in front of me.

Even in that manual environment, there were controls in place to keep the records of transactions safe.

Fast forward three years later in Nigeria, I got employed at a branch of a financial Institution that was in the process of moving transactions from manual records to online real time. That eventually happened and we adapted to the controls suitable for online real time operations.

Not Same Old Same Old

Coming to the U.S over 15 years ago, the technological landscape was a different ball game. With the technological advancement and level of automation, business was not as usual. And even now in Nigeria, business is no longer as usual.

In over 10 years that I worked for small businesses in the U.S, I often met employees entrusted with recording transactions that were not into the boring unsexy job of recording transactions in the accounting systems.I felt like these employees while great workers were better suited for other responsibilities just not accounting.

Whether in a manual, hybrid or completely computerized automated operations, you need a plan or course of action to protect valuable resources from bad actors online and offline.

Finally because COVID-19 has accelerated digital transformation, it means we got a lot of work to do to keep safe online and offline.
