Over 2 years ago, I created this video to articulate my  Why of cybersecurity. Some views may have changed on distinction between IT professionals and Accountants.

Why interest cybersecurity?

Hi my name is Karen A Okwu. I am a Certified Public Accountant and a 

Certified Fraud Examiner. Before 2017 I was a regular finance and accounting professional and by 2017, I become a Certified Public Accountant as well as a Certified Fraud Examiner. 

 In 2018 while I was unemployed and began to learn about the impact of digital transformation upon our careers uh keeping up with the recent development in our industry and I wondered if I would still have a job. 

In 2019 I got employed and signed up for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners mentoring program and with my mentor Justin Davis I drew up a one-year goal and part of that goal was getting a cyber security certification in the last quarter of 2020. 

By 2020 currently COVID-19 accelerated the impact of digital trends in our lives with us work from home situation. I needed more clarity with the cybersecurity certification and the digital trend in our lives so, I signed up for Per Bristow’s business with freedom Program and as at today uh I’m happy to say that I actually got the cyber security certification this week from the Association of International Certification Accountants or the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant. 

And so does this make me as an accountant/finance professional an IT expert so to say? No.  For us accounting and finance professionals to become trusted advisors,we need to 

  •  have a digital or cyber security mindset since we need to understand the terminology so we can communicate with people intelligently in that field  
  • be able to practice good cyber hygiene or housekeeping 
  • communicate properly and then collaborate with different functional teams within an organization or outside of the organization with external teams 

Because of the impact of digital trend that is leading to more incidents of Data breaches/ cyber-attacks and privacy issues, finance and accounting professionals have a role to play in mitigating the risk of loss that comes from this incidents since they impact organizations and clients as well as have implications for operations and as well as the financial lives of clients and organization and at the end of the day that will impact the bottom line.  

And so as an Certified Public Accountant I am inviting you on this journey with me to help keep ourselves safe in our cyber world. Anddto be continued.
