According to www.fnhca.ca on May 13, First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) became aware of unusual activity on its corporate network.

While the investigation was ongoing, FNHA found evidence that certain employee information and limited personal information of others had been impacted. 

Why did it happen? 

From the reports available, we have not been given any reason for the cyberattack except for possible weakness in cybersecurity practices.

How has FNHA mitigated loss from the cyberattack?

  • Immediate action was taken to investigate and intercept an unauthorized entity that had gained access to the network. 
  • Countermeasures were deployed to block unauthorized access and prevent further unauthorized activity. There was no encryption of FNHA’s servers or systems as a result of the incident.  
  • FNHA promptly engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to assist with containment, remediation, and forensic investigation to determine the extent of the incident.  
  • The incident was reported to law enforcement and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of British Columbia. 
  • FNHA took immediate action to issue required notifications to impacted individuals and provide support.  
  • FNHA has no evidence that this cyber incident has impacted any clinical information systems.  
  • Additionally, there was no evidence that this incident is connected to other cyber incidents in British Columbia that have recently received media attention.  
  • The ongoing investigation is the top priority for FNHA. They are working diligently, around the clock, to resolve the matter in a safe and secure manner.
