For the next couple of weeks, the blog will be on the 5 game plan for cybersecurity that was featured in Forbes Magazine for August/September 2022 pages 62-63. The game plan has been discussed in various blog posts in the past in under risk assessment and risk management.

  • Covid-19 Digital transformation and the resulting increase in attack surfaces.
  •  Cybersafety Game Plan should be part of the big-picture thinking moves.
  • First game plan is the twin objective of Transformation and Safety.

Because of the digital transformation that resulted from COVID-19 companies began using new digital tools and platforms which also increased the attack surfaces. The evidence for these attacks that resulted can be seen in the increasing cyber incidents from 2021 to 2022 with companies having 25 cyber-attacks on average. These incidents have shown how businesses are at risk of cyberattacks.

Cybersecurity measures did not keep pace with the technological changes because of the speed at which businesses had to transform digitally to stay in business. The cybersecurity measures for the old ways of doing business were not suitable for the work-from-home and hybrid work models. The control measures were playing catch up after transformation.

As we head into year 3 of COVID-19 disruptions how then can companies ensure cyber safety resulting from the digital transformation in the way of doing business?

Transformation and Safety

The first key here is the marriage of transformation and cybersecurity. Companies can’t have maximum security in every situation since it requires time and expertise, especially in this hybrid work model where companies are finding new ways of doing business digitally. That does not mean companies should accept that having weak security is the price they have to pay for innovation.

Security should be baked into the digital transformation process at the beginning unlike the old way of doing it after the fact. Cybersecurity should become a way of doing business, not an afterthought.
