What ?

The city governement

There has been Cyber-attack on a city government in Arkansas. Currently, residents of Fayetteville are dealing with a suspected cybersecurity threat in the city.

When?

This incident took place in the month of June on 8th ,2023.

Who was affected

The cybersecurity threat has affected certain internet and web services. However, emergency services such as the police, fire department, and 911 are still available for residents to access. I am left wondering if these are compassionate cyber criminals at work.

Incident response

According to a Facebook post, most online/web-based municipal services were proactively taken offline and this includes email, online payments and some.

Keith Macedo, the city’s information technology director, has assured the public that although online services may be unavailable for a few days, his department is working hard to restore these affected systems in a secure and safe manner and bring city services back online as soon as possible.

And leading independent Cybersecurity experts have been engaged to help with the investigations and response.

Although online services may be unavailable for a few days, the team is doing everything they can to bring city services back online as soon as possible.

In the meantime, Fayetteville residents can reach the police department through an alternative non-emergency line 479-575-0258.

Why the increase in cybersecurity threats?

ANATOMIA DE LA CYBER

Many cities, police and fire departments, and other government entities rely on social media to build and maintain strong relationships with their communities.

In Arkansas, law agencies often utilize Facebook to share important updates with residents, such as traffic reports, weather alerts, and other news-related information. By staying connected through social media, these agencies can better serve and protect their communities.

James Gentry, the IT director of Fort Smith, acknowledges the increasing prevalence of cybersecurity threats due to the widespread use of social media and internet payments. He wants to emphasize that the city considers cybersecurity to be a top priority. Fort Smith is willing and ready to assist Fayetteville in any way possible.

How to mitigate loss

Anchiseslandia

To protect against cyberattacks, cities should have a:

  •  Strong cybersecurity program with vulnerability assessments, monitoring, and employee training.
  • Officials must stay updated on threats and use firewalls and anti-virus software. This ensures citizens’ information is safe and trust is maintained.
