What happened?

Kwik Trip according to tiny4.com has recently confirmed that the cause of its system outage was a cyber-security incident, although the company has reassured its customers that there is no indication that payment card information was involved. Unfortunately, the Kwik Trip Rewards app and website are still offline. 

The expert suggested that it seems to be a situation with ransomware where hackers encrypt the systems of the company, lock away their data, and most likely steal some data as well. Unfortunately, these types of attacks are becoming more prevalent. The FBI’s data shows that in Wisconsin, there were $15,000 in losses due to ransomware in 2021, but that number jumped to $286,200 last year.

The power outage prevented Kwik Trip app users from being able to use their app. Customers who had the Kwik Trip card could not make purchases, and several areas were impacted. It also caused companywide product shortages of milk and bread. 

How Kwik Trip has mitigated the loss

While Kwik Trip has reassured its customers that there is no indication that payment card information was involved in the cyber-attack, people in Wisconsin should still be concerned about their data as the attack may have compromised other sensitive information. Here are further steps taken by Kwik trip to mitigate the loss from cyberattacks as seen on X.com; 

  • Kwik trip is working investigating the incident with the help of third-party information cybersecurity expert and indicate that there was no sign of unauthorized access to personally identifiable data of users of the apps. 
  • Kwik trip does not have an end date for the investigations just yet. 
  • Users/customers are encouraged to continue using their cards since purchases are being tracked and their missing rewards will be awarded when Kwik Rewards is back online. 
  • Kwik encouraged users/customers to continue to use Kwik Reward plus credit and debit card at the store. 
  • For users/customers who could not make payment due as a result of the power outage, Kwik is making efforts to ensure any potential late penalties that may have been charged.
